The Brokechella Project

What a thrill it was to be asked to contribute original artwork to Brokechella 2015! In addition to the four pieces I made last year for Elizabeth Birnbaum's exhibit on corn, I created four new original pieces centered on the theme of water. The drought in California, to be more specific: a San Francisco fountain, an Oakland waste bin, a pitcher of water on a restaurant table, and rows of dry farmed crops in San Juan Bautista. Each of these images illuminates one facet of the complex and devastating shortage of water facing this state and country. I am very pleased with how they've turned out, and look forward to listing them for sale on Etsy in the near future. In the meantime, enjoy these process photos!

I was riding my bike out of the 

Berkeley Bowl West parking lot when 

a red scrap of paper under my wheel

caught my eye. 

Much to the oncoming driver's chagrin

I made a sharp u-turn and picked it up

to find this note addressed simply to 

"Lady":

Remember when I drew this? 

Well, I decided to letterpress a postcard from this drawing. I scanned it...

 ... separated the linework and had a polymer plate made...

... then printed a 4 x 6 postcard on the Vandercook Press at Olive Route Design.

Isn't that linework YUMMY on the cardstock?

I Heart Berkeley

... University, that is. I spent a lovely autumny afternoon sketching this piece for a friend of mine to gift his father for Hannukah. Thanks to the left-handed ladies who accompanied me on this arty adventure across campus.
